Brain injury counseling in Connecticut

Who this page is for

  • Traumatic brain injury (mild, moderate, or severe)

  • Acquired brain injury

  • Concussion and post-concussion syndrome

  • Hypoxic or other neurological injuries that changed thinking, mood, or personality

You can start months or years after the injury. Late does not mean too late.

What people often bring

  • “I don’t recognize myself.”

  • Short fuse, tears, or a flatness that was not there before

  • Fog, fatigue, and shame about needing rest

  • A partner who is now a scheduler, driver, and translator

  • Fear of work, driving, or being left alone

  • Grief that does not look like funeral grief

These are common after brain injury. They are not proof that you are ungrateful for surviving.

How counseling helps

We slow the hour down. We pick one problem that is making the week harder — sleep and irritability, a fight at home, dread before an appointment — and work it in language your brain can hold.

When trauma is stuck in the body of the story (the crash, the fall, the ICU), EMDR or hypnosis may be useful. When the pain is grief and identity, we treat it as grief and identity. I will not force a technique because it is listed on the website.

Families

Brain injury is a family event. Partners and parents can join some sessions, or book their own. Separate caregiver counseling is here: /caregiver-counseling-connecticut
