Frequently Asked Questions.
Can Therapy Help After a Brain Injury?
Absolutely. While rehabilitation often focuses on physical recovery, many people living with a traumatic brain injury (TBI), concussion, or acquired brain injury also experience emotional and psychological challenges that deserve attention. Changes in mood, anxiety, depression, frustration, grief, identity, relationships, and self-confidence are common after a brain injury and can significantly affect quality of life.
Counseling provides a safe and supportive space to process these changes, develop practical coping strategies, and rebuild confidence. Therapy can also help individuals navigate major life transitions such as returning to work or school, adjusting to changes in independence, managing stress, and strengthening relationships with family and friends.
At Neurospark Counseling, we understand that brain injuries affect every person differently. Therapy is individualized and adapted to each person's cognitive abilities, energy level, and recovery goals. Our goal is to help survivors move beyond simply surviving and begin building a meaningful and fulfilling life after brain injury.
Is Depression Common After Stroke?
Yes. Depression is one of the most common emotional challenges following a stroke. Research suggests that approximately one-third of stroke survivors experience depression during their recovery. Feelings of sadness, grief, frustration, anxiety, loss of confidence, and uncertainty about the future are all common responses to the physical, cognitive, and lifestyle changes that can occur after a stroke.
These emotional changes are not a sign of weakness or a lack of motivation. They often result from a combination of neurological changes in the brain, the stress of recovery, changes in independence, and adjusting to a different way of life.
Counseling can play an important role in stroke recovery by helping survivors process these experiences, develop healthy coping strategies, improve communication with loved ones, and rebuild hope. Therapy may also help reduce anxiety, improve emotional resilience, and support long-term adjustment.
If emotional changes are interfering with daily life, relationships, or rehabilitation, seeking support from a counselor experienced in neurological conditions can be an important part of recovery.
What If Memory Problems Make Therapy Difficult?
Memory difficulties are common after brain injury, stroke, concussion, and other neurological conditions, and they should never prevent someone from seeking counseling.
At Neurospark Counseling, therapy is adapted to meet each client's individual cognitive needs. Sessions may move at a slower pace, include repetition of important concepts, use written summaries or visual supports, and focus on practical strategies that are easier to remember and apply in everyday life.
Counseling is not a test of memory. The goal is to provide a supportive environment where you can explore your experiences, develop coping skills, and work toward meaningful personal goals. We recognize that fatigue, attention, executive functioning, and information processing may also affect how therapy is experienced, and we adjust our approach accordingly.
Many individuals with cognitive challenges benefit greatly from counseling when therapy is individualized to their strengths and needs.
Can Caregivers Attend Sessions?
Yes. Brain injury, stroke, and brain tumors affect the entire family, not just the individual who experienced the medical condition. Many survivors benefit when a spouse, partner, parent, adult child, or other caregiver participates in some therapy sessions.
Caregiver involvement can improve communication, increase understanding of the survivor's emotional and cognitive challenges, and strengthen problem-solving within the family. Joint sessions may also help address changes in family roles, relationship stress, caregiver burnout, and adjusting to life after neurological injury.
In addition to participating in sessions with their loved one, caregivers may also benefit from their own individual counseling. Caring for someone with a neurological condition can be emotionally and physically demanding, and caregivers often experience stress, grief, anxiety, exhaustion, and feelings of isolation.
Supporting caregivers is an important part of supporting the recovery of the entire family.
Do You Offer Telehealth?
Yes. Neurospark Counseling offers secure telehealth counseling for many clients throughout Connecticut, allowing individuals and families to access specialized support from the comfort of their own homes.
Telehealth can be especially beneficial for brain injury and stroke survivors who experience fatigue, mobility limitations, transportation challenges, chronic pain, or sensory sensitivities. Eliminating travel may help conserve energy and make attending therapy more manageable.
Research has shown that telehealth can be an effective way to deliver mental health services for many individuals. During your initial consultation, we will discuss whether virtual counseling is the best fit for your needs and goals. In some situations, in-person appointments may be recommended based on your individual circumstances.
Our goal is to make specialized neurological counseling as accessible and convenient as possible while maintaining high-quality, personalized care.
Do You Accept Insurance?
Neurospark Counseling is a private-pay practice and does not participate as an in-network provider with insurance companies. This allows us to focus on providing personalized, specialized counseling without many of the restrictions that insurance plans may place on mental health treatment, such as diagnosis requirements, session limits, or treatment authorizations.
We understand that investing in therapy is an important decision. To help make services more accessible, we provide superbills for clients who wish to seek reimbursement through their out-of-network insurance benefits. While reimbursement cannot be guaranteed, many insurance plans offer partial coverage for out-of-network mental health services. We encourage you to contact your insurance company to learn about your specific benefits.
Neurospark Counseling also offers a sliding fee scale for clients who qualify, helping to make specialized neurological counseling more accessible to individuals and families.
If you have questions about fees, superbills, or whether counseling is the right fit for your needs, we're happy to discuss your options during an initial consultation.
